“Keys Down If You Stay” is the new single from Montreal-based Cola available digitally on Fire Talk. “Cola’s sleek sound fits in with the melodic side of contemporary post-punk, with sharper hooks and more succinct songwriting than the members’ past work” (Pitchfork). Tim Darcy’s distinctive voice harness a sound that is at once keenly melodic & invitingly romantic. Some of their most accessible songwriting to date, it still captures the band’s signature melancholic charm at its finest.
lyrics
Duces low, play like they’re made to
keys down if you stay
Wading out, like a zero in the water
remainder too strained
knee-deep and straight out
Keys down if you stay
Pace around, I'm a fragrant kind of shadow
Play it low, this is take all numerology
Listen in like a fiend operator
Keys down if you stay
Wading out, like a zero in the water
remainder too strained
knee-deep and straight out
Keys down if you stay
Leave it there, it’ll hang on til tomorrow
Play it low, this is take-all numerology
My fiction’s in such a state
In situ, I will stay
Til it comes back a little higher
Still feeds back on that desire
It stays on another day
then comes back a little lighter

A fascinating document of a band finding its groove. It's got a drier sound and is rougher around the edges than "FOD", and some of these tracks feel more like experimental studies in rhythm/texture than proper songs. "Sunbeat" is especially weird, and I love them for it. Steven Moses
